Loud music and deafening concerts was a main staple in my youth. I used to thrash around like I was having a seizure in front of glass breaking speakers until I could barely hear. Over the years I have noticed ringing in my ears that won’t go away. The medical term for this condition is Tinnitus. Whenever my environment is quiet I have this constant ring that I can’t control. I sleep with some sort of white noise maker to take my mind away from it to help me get to sleep. During the summer it’s a fan, during the winter it’s an air purifier. This technique has helped me sleep over the years but I still look for ways to help elevate the Tinnitus symptoms. I’ve tried supplements and have had success with them but I never consistently stayed on them to have long term relief. Pycnogenol, Ginkgo, & CoQ10 were the supplements I’ve tried. Pycnogenol worked the best for me.
Recently I was reading an article about mediation and Tinnitus and how its helped a lot of people control its nerve racking symptoms. Stress and worry can make the ringing worse so incorporating mindfulness mediation techniques in everyday life can help lessen the constant ringing.
A study was done at the University of California at San Francisco by Lead researcher Jennifer Gans. Over an eight week period participants learned the mindfulness techniques to help elevate the Tinnitus symptoms. Numerous participants have found relief from this condition by meditating daily.
The purpose of these mind-body therapies is to help the body to relax. These stress management techniques can shut off the stress response and thus minimize the negative effects on the body that come with it.
Personally I have been using stress relieving mediation for other reason over the last few months and can say that my mind doesn’t focus on the Tinnitus as much as it did before I started. I never set out to control my Tinnitus with mediation it just happened naturally as a side effect of lower my stress levels. My symptoms have lowered over time and they don’t cause me to worry as much. I’ve accepted this condition and I won’t let it control my life.
Once again I have proven to myself that being quiet with my mind for a few minutes a day can do wonders for my body and keeping it healthy. If you have Tinnitus I highly recommend doing some sort of stress relieving meditation. Even if it’s just 10 minutes a day a little is better then none.
The quieter you become, the more you are able to hear.
