My wife made a comment on how my belly is sticking out a little bit more then normal. She said, “How can you be gaining weight when you‘re doing that Paleo type of eating… Maybe that’s not your thing”. Her comments struck a chord with me. It’s not that she validated that I have a new belly friend but that I have been eating differently lately and was hoping to slim down while preserving my muscle.
For the last year I’ve been lifting weights a lot and eating the bodybuilding style diet. Lean protein, lots of complex carbs and cruciferous vegetables. It’s been great and I have defiantly packed on muscle. About a month ago I decided I wanted to start eating more vegetables and pull back from mass building caloric intake. I came across the Paleo way of eating and thought I would give it try. I eat lean protein to keep my muscle, I swap out brown rice for vegetables and I can eat an array of nuts and fruit. Sounds good to me!
Over the weekend and before my wife mentioned that I was getting a little junk in the front, I had stepped on the scale. The scale showed that I’d put on about 5 pounds since my last weigh in. My wishful thinking thought it’s extra muscle, but now I’m starting to wonder…
I had to ask myself the question, have I really been staying true to the Paleo way of eating? Oh Shit, here goes. No!
During the day, I eat very well and much inline with the Paleo way of eating. I have lean protein like chicken, fish or turkey with fresh vegetables, salads, fruits, etc. Paleo approved foods. At night, it’s a different story…
I get these massive carb cravings, so I binge on chips, the kids cookies, even bread. I’ve been thinking to myself, “It’s ok, I did well during the day, I’ll do better tomorrow night”. But I haven’t, I’ve been sneaking in simple carbs trying to control my carb monster. I’m not feeding him what he’s been getting for the last year, which is a lot of carbs. Granted they were mostly slow digesting complex carbs but I ate lots more.
I have heard that the first few weeks of being on the Paleo way of eating can make you feel kind of sluggish while your body adjusts to having lower carbs. I thought I was easing into Paleo, I guess I was snacking and packing my new spare tire.
So here I am at a crossroad. Do I continue eating like I have been and add the extra insulation to my mid section or do I go fully on the Paleo, deal with the carb cravings, possible feel crappy for a bit but really try out this way of eating?
To myself and the 3 people who read my blog. I vow to eat only Paleo approved foods for 1 month starting today! 4/17/12
Here are the rules I set for this challenge. It’s time for me to get serious!
Rule 1: I will not eat any of the kids cookies, chips or crackers
Rule 2: I will only have Paleo approved foods
Rule 3: When the carb monster rears it’s ugly head I will visualize my goals a stay strong
Rule 4: I will do some form of cardio everyday
Rule 5: Smile, this is going to be easy
Current weight: 210lbs 4/17/12
After a month I will report on the diet and how I like it.
