There are two main things that cause sciatic pain, bulging or ruptured disc or piriformis syndrome.
When the piriformis muscles get tightened or shortened they can press on the sciatic nerve causing pain that can range from a minor irritation to extreme pain. The pain most often starts in the buttocks and runs into the deep muscles in the back of the thigh. The piriformis runs from the sacrum to the thigh bone at the hip joint and passes over the sciatic nerve.
I do a lot of running and the last three weeks I’ve been suffering from sciatica. This is a common problem with runners, cyclists and anyone else who may overuse and under stretch their hips.
It started off about a month ago and has recently reached the unbearable to run stage. In my case I’m assuming it is piriformis syndrome since my pain is only during my flat or downhill runs. Recently I’ve been incorporating some yoga to help relieve the pain.
Here are some great, simple, yoga stretches to help this pain.
- Reclined Spinal Twist
- Reclined Hip Opener
- Knee Hug
- Cat Cow poses
- Kneeling Lung Stretch
- Childs Pose
